Lebeau, J.J.C. (Chris)

Chris Lebeau was an important representative of the Dutch Art Deco & Art Nouveau, multi talented and very productive. In 1925 Lebeau was drawn to the potters art, drawed designs for Amphora pottery, intended for mass production.Worked with Gerrit de Blanken and designed in 1926 ceramics for R. Guérin te Bouffioulx (Belgium). Mark/backstamp see picture.

Chris Lebeau was very much involved in the execution of his designs, but never worked on the potter's wheel himself. At Blanken and Guérin executed (stoneware) vases, bowls and pots had a simple & characteristic shape, like flat, egg shape, cylinder or conical with (most times) a rib decoration. At Guérin he learned about stream glazes. Lebeau was the first who used a combination of salt and glaze for his pottery glazes.

Strong advocate for the 'cultural raising of the working class’, inspite of this, his decorative art pottery was not affordable for this group, his ceramics were sold at Metz & Co.
